Languages such as Spanish and Italian have more than 1 "you" addressing pronouns. For example, in Spanish, you would say
'como esta usted' when addressing elders
Otherwise, you would just say
'como estas'
I've also observed interesting trends in this different in language use in Lima, Peru where the city stop signs state "Pare" for stop. That the word for stop in Spanish, colloquially, is "para"; this shows that there is even a visual/written formality.
