Alg 1 Word Problem for Linear Equations

Question

Last year you mowed lawns or washed cars for 10 households. You charged $200 a year to mow a lawn and $180 a year to wash cars. If you earned a total of $1880 lasted year, how many households did u mow and how many households did u wash their cars?

m + w = 10

200m + 180w = 1880

m = 10 - w (or w = 10 - m)

Substitute!

200(10 - w) + 180w = 1880

2000 - 200w + 180w = 1880

-20w = -120

w = 6

m = 10 - 6

m = 4
