x + y = 260
x = 3y + 8
3y + 8 + y = 260 or 4y = 252
y = 63
x = 3(63) + 8 or 197
Solution set is written as (x,y) = (197,63).

Hi Lucy,
I guess you mean that 260 is separated into two numbers so that the first number is 8 more than three times the second number.
Let's let x represent the second number .
Let's let y represent the first number. We know that the first number is 8 more than 3 times the second number .
Therefore y = 3x + 8
We also know from the question above that y + x = 260 . (The two numbers add to 260!)
Now substituting y = 3x + 8 into our equation above gives us
3x + 8 + x = 260
4x + 8 = 260
4x = 252 => x = 63
So the second number x = 63
The first number y = 3x + 8 = 3 × 63 + 8 = 197
Lets check our work now !
63 + 197 = 260 So our two numbers add up to 260!
So we have showed that are first number y = 197 and our second number x = 63.
I hope that was helpful.
