"Upon" is a preposition in English. It is generally considered a more formal version of the preposition "on." I tend to use it with a gerund (present participle or -ing form of the verb used as a noun) at the beginning of a sentence. Examples: Upon entering the room, he saw an unexpected guest. Upon hearing the correct answer, she understood her mistake.
