The quotation/term "government of the people, by the people, for the people" came from Abraham Lincoln at Gettysburg. Applied to the American form of government, it deals with a republic. A republic is a form of government in which citizens/voters elect representatives to represent their concerns in the government. An example being voters in New York City elect a mayor and city council members who act as their representatives. The same is true for state and federal governments--Americans vote for representatives to advocate their concerns in governmental bodies.
