Victor is 4 3/4  feet tall.  Miles is 5 5/6  feet tall.  How much taller is Miles? Write your answer as an improper fraction.

Multiply the whole numbers by the denominators of the fractions that accompany them, and then add that number to the numerator of that fraction. 4*4=16 ; 16+3=19. your improper fraction for the first number is 19/4. do the same for the second number. 6*5=30 ; 30+5=35. 35/6 is your second improper fraction. if you want to find out the difference between the two heights, you have to get the fractions to have a common denominator. The simplest way to do this is to calculate the LCD (least common denominator). Calculate multiples of both denominators, and use the smallest multiple as the new denominator. in this case, the LCD is 12. To convert both of these fractions to have denominators of 12, you need to multiply the numerators by the number that it would take the denominator to get to 12. In this case, 4*3=12, so multiply the fraction 19/4 by 3/3 (=57/12). Similarly, 6*2= 12, so the second improper fraction 35/6 needs to be multiplied by 2/2 (70/12). now subtract the fraction to get the difference in height. (70/12)-(57/12) = (70-57)/12 = 13/12. This being said, Miles is 13/12 ft taller than victor.
