Hi Jackie,
Part of the problem says “the plant is 6 inches,” so I’ll assume that it was 6 inches tall before the two weeks began.
In the first week it grew 3/4 of an inch.
In the second week it grew 2 * (3/4) of an inch. When we multiply two numbers together like this we just multiply the 2 times the numerator of the fraction, so we get growth of 6/4 in the second week.
The total height of the plant is the original 6 + 3/4 + 6/4.
When we add the 3/4 + 6/4, since the denominators are the same, we can just add the numerators and leave the denominator alone: 3/4 + 6/4 = 9/4 which is also 2 1/4.
The total height of the plant is 6 + 2 1/4 = 8 1/4 inches tall.
Please let me know if I can be more helpful, thanks!
Joe
