Both are good resources for learning the language. The most important thing is to make sure that what you are reading is at the right level, so you are exposed to new vocabulary or grammatical structures without being overwhelmed by them. It's also helpful to be interested in what you're reading. If there's a book you've already read in your native language that you would enjoy reading again in English, it might be the best choice because you are familiar with the content and will enjoy it. On the other hand, a newspaper could be better if you are interested in the news because you'll already have familiarity with the content and a series of shorter articles might hold your interest better than a book.

It's not really about which resource is better, but what your goals and current language skills are. For some, their reading ability cannot comprehend a newspaper article or a book. It's best to find a resource that you are interested in reading and that is at your reading level. I tell my students they can figure out their reading level by:
- Opening to the middle of a book.
- Reading a page.
- Counting the number of words you do not know.
- If the book has between 1-5 words you do not know, then it is close to your reading level.
- If it has no words that are new to you or more than 5 words, then pick another book because it is either below or above your reading level.
Newspapers are great, but it is harder to find newspapers for lower-level English language learners. One great resource is Easy English News: it has relevant articles for English students as well as vocabulary explanations.
