If he has 1/4 of the original amount left, then he must have spent 3/4 of it. So $15 is 3/4 of the original amount. To write this mathematically, say 15= (3/4)x. Divide both sides by 3/4. The original amount must be $20. Now to check your work, see if it makes sense. If you have $20 and you spend $15, do you have a quarter of your original amount left? Yes, because $5 is a quarter of $20.
