Nouns can be feminine, masculine, or neutral. "Neutral" in Romanian is not a gender per se; so-called neutral nouns are masculine in the singular and feminine in the plural.
Nouns can be placed in one of five case: nominative, genitive, accusative, dative, and vocative. Unlike all other Romance languages (Spanish, Italian, French, Catalan, Portuguese, Galician), in which the case is conveyed through prepositions only, Romanian nouns also decline by changing the form of the noun. For instance, possession (genitive case) in Spanish would be conveyed through the preposition de ("la casa de la madre"), whereas in formal Romanian we would say "casa mamei." Less educated people would also say "casa lui mama" thus using a preposition instead of declining the noun; however, this would be considered incorrect or too casual by most linguists.
