Social Identity Theory (Tajfel & Turner, 1986) is all about understanding ourselves based on the social groups and contexts we belong to. I'd highly recommend checking it out.
Wilson & Kraft (1993) did some research involving introspection and why we're sometimes inaccurate about our own feelings.
You could also look at research in social comparison theory (Festinger, 1954) and self-awareness.
