The term WW1 was not even conceived until the end of WW1. During the war, everyone refer to it as The Great War, or War to end All Wars. More than the Indian wars, you can conceive the Napoleonic Wars as a closer resemblance to a World War than any other previous wars.
Why WW1 is called a World War? It involved many countries, from the main battlefields in Europe, to Mesopotamia and the Ottoman Empire, African colonies engulfed in war and countries like Brazil and Mexico (in it's own way) having participation directly or indirectly in the war.
