Speed is a rate of change. In this case, it represents a change in miles compared to a change in time. When we compare two quantities in math, we divide the numbers to find their basic relationship; a unit rate.
If the person walks 1/3 of a mile, we can divide that by 1/9 of an hour.
1/3 ÷ 1/9
When dividing a fraction by a fraction, we keep the first fraction the way it is, change our division into multiplication and flip the second fraction (which is multiplying by the reciprocal).
=1/3 × 9/1
=9/3
=3 miles per hour
The person's speed is 3 miles per hour.
If 1 hour is 3 miles, then 1/9 of an hour is 1/3 mile.
