Hi Kynzie,
You asked: "A tree that is 11 feet tall is growing at a rate of 2 feet each year. A tree that is 14 feet tall is growing at a rate of 1/2 foot each year. How many years will is take the two trees to reach the same height?"
Let's write an equation. The first tree starts at 11 ft. and adds 2 ft. This continues for an unknown number of years, which I'll represent with the variable y.
11 + 2y
The second tree is 14 ft. and grows at 1/2 ft. each year for an unknown number of years. We can represent that as:
14 + 0.5y
When these two expressions are equal to each other, the trees are the same height.
11 + 2y = 14 + 0.5y
Solving for y will give you the number of years it will take for the trees to reach the same height.
