The renaissance came to existence by a rediscovery of ancient Greco-Roman ruins during the Dark Ages. Previously, art had a limited function used for religious purposes only. The renaissance is seen as the greatest art movement because of the resurgence of nature and the ability to depict realism was mastered by great artists such as Michelangelo, Da Vinci, and Durer. Oil painting as a medium on canvas made it possible to create hyper-realistic paintings with techniques like chiaroscuro and sfumato. Artists used thin layers of paint to create realistic texture and detail. Other techniques like atmospheric perspective also gave artworks a natural illusion of depth.
