As we know now, stars are balls of gas like our sun. Due to light diffusion, they sometimes appear to be pointy or sparkling. Early humans, since they could only use their naked eye to see stars, gave it the pointy shape we recognize as stars today. I would also wager there is something also to do with sacred geometry, alchemic symbols, and religious iconography at play with our common interpretation of the shape of stars.
