How should I say "wife" in Spanish?

Some seem to suggest that "esposa" is overly formal and recommend "mujer" instead. The latter seems (potentially) a little possessive ("my woman"), especially in our current climate. Or would "mujer" never be construed that way?

ALSO - is there a difference between Castilian and Latin American words for "wife" in terms of colloquial usage?

Gracias!
