In the Old Testament, the Hebrew people believed in the concept of "an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth." In the New Testament however, Jesus states that Christians should not pursue revenge. In Matthew 5:38-39, he states that:
"You have heard that it was said, 'Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.' But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also."
In verses 43-44, he continues on to say:
"You have heard that it was said, 'Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you."
Though revenge can be tempting, ultimately God will issue it at the judgement day and it is not our responsibility. Instead, the Bible holds that we should be kind to everyone, even people who have hurt us.
