From my experience many Christian churches have their own beliefs concerning tongue speaking. My understanding of this comes directly from the Bible. Tongue speaking according to the Bible is one of the many spiritual gifts. Speaking in tongues is meant to instruct oneself as well as others. In the book of Mark chapter 16, Jesus mentions speaking in tongues as one of the signs of those who believe. It is important that the reader understands that this gift is not given to all, but is given by the same spirit that gives other spiritual gifts as mentioned in 1 Corinthians 12:4-10.
