A Linguist who Can Help You Understand Grammar
The imperative form of a verb is used to give an order or make a request. The subject, not written or spoken, is understood to be “you”. The order, “Close the door.” is actually a statement, “You will close the door.” The more polite request form shows this to be true: “Will you close the door (please)?”
“(You will) close the door.”
”Will you close the door, (please)?”
In either case, the real antecedent of the pronoun subject “you” can be used:
“Jake, close the door.”
”Jake, will you close the door, please?”
