There was an inordinate amount of social upheaval in the United States during the1900's, particularly involving unions, strikes led by them, and social activism. There were Communist sympathizers and activists who leveraged this turmoil to promote Socialism as an answer to our social ills and economic disparities. Supposedly, it even crept into Hollywood which caused a lot finger-pointing at movie stars and move studios.

The resulting mayhem and turmoil led to Congressional calls for investigations which spawned the McCarthy trials and investigations.
