Among the most famous hidden messages in famous works can be found in the painting 'The Ambassadors' by Hans Holbein the Younger, dated to 1533. A distorted image cuts across the bottom fourth of the composition, which is revealed to be a human skull when viewed from the lower right or left-hand side. It can be interpreted as a memento mori, or reminder of death, which was a popular motif in Renaissance paintings. The painting is full of other use of codes and symbols that are contextualized by the struggles between Catholics and Protestants in the mid 16th century.
