Hello my dear friend! I would be very happy to help you to understand this:
Whenever you see the two ways so there is no meaningful difference between them and as you mention it, it is more literary/formal/archaic construction, for example for word Crying or weeping you would see in ancient and most of old books in farsi the /geristan/ rather than gerye kardan. Obviously the word gerye kardan is pretty new way to express the meaning for crying.
