Am I learning Farsi correctly?

So over the past couple of weeks I have been learning Farsi. I've made considerable progress in that time, I've expanded my vocab, learned many new verbs, and can even create simple sentences in Farsi. The problem is that when surrounded by people who speak Farsi, I still understand very little of it. I feel as if I've been studying the wrong things all this time. I understand that progress doesn't happen overnight and that it will take months and years to learn a new language, but I still feel as if I am doing something wrong. So what do the members of /r/farsi think, am I learning Farsi incorrectly or is it just going to take time?

The thing is that there are 2 versions of Farsi, one is used in writing and formal situations and the other is the informal form. Although it is the same language, if you are learning Farsi using a text book, you wont be able to understand some of the things. Farsi speakers will understand you, but your speech might sound sort of out of context. If you give more information about your sources and strategies, you might find a better answer to help you solve the issue.
