Learning to speak for my boyfriend's family...best strategies?
Hi everyone!
I am meeting my Iranian boyfriend's parents soon, for the first time. They live in Iran and will be visiting, and neither of them speaks English. I have decided to take on the project of learning Farsi, with the long term goal of becoming fluent. I'm happy to do this, as I love languages and want to be able to communicate with my boyfriend's family.
However, I'm sure that actually becoming fluent will take me years, as it would with any other language. The only problem is that I have more or less 6 months until I meet his parents. So, I'm wondering about any strategies that could help me maximize my ability to hold simple conversation during that time. I would love to actually be able to speak with them.
...Does anyone have an opinion about when is an ideal time to begin learning Farsi script? I'm debating if it makes sense for me to spend these 6 months focusing more on purely listening and speaking abilities, or if its important to start learning the script from the get go as well.
Any input is appreciated!!
Hi! I hope you have a nice time meeting his parents! So if you want to learn Farsi, I suggest just listening to listen to your boyfriend around the house. Think of it like being a baby again. You didn’t know English and you pretty much just learned from people around you. If you tell your boyfriend to speak to you in Farsi you might learn a little quicker. (you might also get a good laugh out of it) If that doesn’t work or you want to find other ways, you can try online apps and books.
