I believe that just as Iceland experiences warmer weather due to sub-Atlantic currents, so does Japan from warm Pacific currents. Not far from the South China Sea, the Islands of Honshu, Hokkaido, and the like, enjoy milder weather because of the warm currents, as do the Phillipines, Singapore and Hong Kong, to name a few.
