State refers to territory (a specified area within borders) and an established government, which implies that it has a population over which it has authority. Nation -- often used in colloquial conversation to refer to a state (or country, which is synonymous with state) -- refers to a group of people that live within a geographic area and have a common history, culture, language, etc. This definition is most applicable in the fields of politics and international relations.
A nation-state refers to a nation that also has sovereignty (internationally-recognized territory and the legitimate authority to govern its people. All nation-states are also states, but not all states are nation-states. States with a very diverse population, whether culturally, linguistically, or otherwise, are not nation-states.
