You may see similarities between English and other languages because the language has been influenced by many other cultures. The English language was greatly influenced by German and French among other languages. English is a Germanic language because of the Germanic people who invaded England in the 5th century and made a big impact. French had a big influence on English as well. Believe it or not, almost half of English words come from French, 45% to be exact.
