The Alabama Claims were filed by the United States against the United Kingdom primarily to have the UK and the South pay for losses inflicted by C.S.S. Alabama. The C.S.S. Alabama was a very successful commerce raiding vessel that damaged or sunk over 60 Union ships, most of which were merchant vessels. After the Civil War, Great Britain reimbursed the United States $15.5 million for damages caused by C.S.S. Alabama and other Confederate warships
