When do you use estar and forms of estar?

While ser is mostly used for permanent conditions except for expressing time (es la una, son las dos) and for expressing location of organized events (el desfile es en la ciudad - the parade is in the city), estar is for temporary conditions. First, estar is used for expressing location of people and things (estamos en el cine - we are in the movie theater). Secondly, estar is used to express health (estoy bien - I am well). Next, estar is used for emotions (estamos alegres - we are happy). Lastly, estar is used with the Present Progressive tense (estoy comiendo un postre - I am eating a dessert).

WEATHER: ¨Está lloviendo¨, ¨está nublado¨, ¨está soleado¨...

HEALTH or PHYSICAL CONDITION: estoy enferma, la sopa está fría, la puerta está cerrada, la clase está desordenada.

EMOTION: estoy triste, Sara está contenta

LOCATION (except events): Madrid está en España, la televisión está en el salón, yo estoy en Florida. Location of event use SER: El partido es en el estadio, la reunión es en la oficina, el concierto es en el auditorium.
