How can I help my Russian friend learn English? She’s learning at school, but the way they teach it is hard.

I have taught English to many Russian students and have heard that it is difficult in their native country. I therefore encourage them to expose themselves to as much English as possible through media, whether reading, listening to music, or watching television or movies. Exposure to the language as it is actually spoken is vital for these students.

I know how she feels. I took four years of Spanish in college and can barely speak a word of it because we rarely just talked to each other in the language. She should immerse herself in English as much as possible. All day long, speak English and listen to English. For example, write your shopping list in English and watch television with closed captions to read it while you listen, and music in English, too. Nowadays there are apps for your phone that you can download for practice. Play word games such as Scrabble and listen to music only in English. A list of vocabulary words that you need to use daily is a good idea for practice as well. I am sure there is a FB page for Russian speakers to learn English together. Hope this helps.
