The English alphabet originates actually from the Phonecian consonantal writing system, which was adopted by the Greeks and converted to an alphabet. From here, the Etruscans borrowed the alphabet, and from here it was transferred to Latin speakers. Once the alphabet arrived with Latin, it became more or less the alphabet that we know and use today (with the exception of one or two letters).
