It is important to have at least a basic vocabulary, which could include about 200 basic vocabulary works, but these must include a few verbs: Tener, Ser, Haber, Estar, Ir, and Estar. If you are able to at least the present tense of these verbs you will begin to understand a little in movies. There is a great book called 500 Spanish Verbs that will also help you with the conjugation of Spanish verbs, including great explanations to the different tenses (They have this in English as well if you are not completely familiar with the names/types of conjugations). Include Spanish movies, talk shows, and music into your life and you will slowly begin to increase your "ear" for Spanish. Increase vocabulary through sites like Duo Lingo apps as well. I highly recommend taking at least beginner level courses for pronunciation.
