Your colleagues are feeding you an old Texas tall tale, there are plenty of natural lakes in Texas. The area around Dallas in particular can be quite swampy, and there are plenty of natural lakes nearby. Many of them are oxbows, which form when a bend in a river gets cut off from the rest of the waterway. While it's true that the man-made lakes are larger and more prominent, that doesn't mean that the natural kind aren't out there. Texas is HUGE, so your instinct that there have to be lakes in that area by sheer force of size is correct.
