That is an interesting question.
A major advantage to Piaget's theory was how well he researched it, and how well researched it has been since. Studies show that it is a highly accurate model (although some studies also disagree with Piaget and his stages). Another advantage is how clear and easy to understand and generalize the model is.
A disadvantage to all stage-based models of cognitive development is the idea that people grow in clearly defined stages (always one step forward and never a step back). People can grow in different areas at different times, or regress. Another limitation to Piaget's model is that it ends at age 12, I'm sure you can detect significant cognitive difference between a 12 year old and adult.
