Absolutely not! This is a term that is mostly attributed to the work of Dan Goleman, though I would argue elements of what we would consider "emotional intelligence" could be seen in older theories such as Howard Gardner's concepts of inter- and intrapersonal intelligence, or Sternberg's concept of practical intelligence. Goleman postulates that emotional intelligence has several components that involve the following:
- knowing one's own emotions
- managing one's emotions
- using one's emotions to motivate oneself
- recognizing the emotions of other people
- managing relationships
Hope this helps!
