The names of most body parts have their origins in the Greek and Roman languages. It is my understanding that body parts were named after items that looked familiar to the body parts. For example, the tibia was named after a similar appearing flute. Some of the names are quite literally Latin translations. This is why when studying science it was often recommended to study Latin.
