What were the acceptance criteria in universities of medieval Europe?

Universities of Medieval Europe consisted of students and itinerant professors, whom the students would pay directly. The wandering teachers would set up shop in public houses and teach what subject they knew. Eventually the universities would set up more permanent places of specialization and expertise in philosophy, medicine, religion, and other fields. The University of Bologna, for instance, taught medicine, anatomy and related subjects.
