Hi Imeria,
You asked: A map is drawn with a scale of 1 inch = 15 miles. Nichol measured the distance to the next town as 3 inches. How many miles does she have to travel to get to the next town?
I don't want to give away the answer directly, so I will help you with the information you need to figure out this problem on your own.
Let's suppose that the map scale is 1 inch = 10 miles. That means that every 1 inch on the map represents 10 miles in the real world. If something is 2 inches away on the map, is is 20 miles away in the real world...If it is 5 inches away on the map, it is 50 miles in the real world. As you might see from this example, I am using repeated addition (another way of thinking about multiplication) to solve the problem.
You can also solve this type of problem using a ratio:
1 in./10 mi. = 5 in/x mi.
