The principle of 'checks and balances' evolved to keep all the federal government individuals and groups in the Legislative, Judicial, Executive, and other departments from undermining the principles of the Republic that were already addressed by our Founding Fathers in the Constitution. Actual case law may have changed some of this principle's tenets/beliefs in minute ways.
