ean-Michel Basquiat’s artistic style was profoundly shaped by his graffiti background, his cultural identity, and his role in the expressionist revival of the 1970s that later developed into Neo-Expressionism. As a student at City-As-School, where I had the privilege of knowing him, Basquiat worked under the graffiti moniker "Samo is God," blending text, symbols, and striking imagery in his street art. These elements carried over into his fine art, where he created raw, emotive works that critiqued race, identity, and power structures. Basquiat wasn’t just influenced by Neo-Expressionism—he helped lay the groundwork for its emergence as a major art movement.
