2x + 5 = 6x - 5
We are first going to combine the x terms so there is one x term on the left side of the equation. To do this we subtract 6x from both sides of the equation:
2x -6x + 5 = 6x -6x -5
-4x +5 = -5
Then we are going to combine the numerical terms so there is one numerical term on the right side of the equation: To do this we subtract 5 from both sides of the equation:
-4x + 5 - 5 = -5 -5
-4x = -10
Next we want to end up with x = a value. To do that we divide both sides of the equation by -4.
-4x = -10
----- -----
-4 -4
x = 10/4
Then we reduce the fraction to its lowest terms by dividing numerator and denominator by 2:
x = 5/2
