The epidermis is the most superficial layer of cells in the skin. For this reason the epidermis is many, many cells thick; I have seen estimates of 30 cells. The epidermis is divided into 5 layers or stratums; from deepest to superficial, the stratum basale, the stratum spinosum, stratum granulosum, stratum lucidum and stratum corneum.
