The Continental victory at the end of the American Revolutionary War eliminated the Proclamation Line of 1763. The Proclamation Line was enforced by the British government and prevented British colonists from settling to the west of the Appalachian Mountains. The new government of the United States did not recognize the proclamation line because it was only enforced under British rule. As a result, many new US citizens began to move west of the Appalachians.
The federal government of the United States was constructed by officials who had westward expansion in mind. During his presidency, Thomas Jefferson conducted the Louisiana Purchase and also organized the Lewis and Clark Expedition to further secure a policy of western expansion.
The expansion to the west indeed happened very rapidly following the American Revolution.
