Gentle alternative for "abused the crap out of something"?

I really like the saying "abused the crap out of....." because it feels strong. Recently I am asked to prepare a speech and I don't think it's appropriate to use the saying. Are there any formal ways of saying it?\n\nThanks.\n\nEdit: to add a bit of context this is my graduation speech. I'm trying to say something like "abused the crap out of the freedom I got", but I'm pretty sure I'll use this again in the future.

Dear Graduate Speaker,

I would suggest a phrase such as "I totally misused the freedom I was given" or "I absolutely abused the freedom I had." If I may add a little bit of advice on public speaking (especially in an academic setting), I would try not to use your original phrase that includes the word "crap" in it. It is too coloquial and conversational (and gentle swear word as well) for a formal speech such as the one you will be giving. It may be tempting to use it to sound funny or friendly or even "stronger" as you said, but again, since you are asking here in this forum, I would dare recommend that you keep that phrase for after your speech has been given, when you leave the stage or podium and are among close friends.

Haha...I agree that "abused the crap out of" is not the best phrase for a formal situation! A lighter phrase with same meaning is "took advantage of" or "took great advantage of," depending on the emphasis you want to give. Another is "to make the most of." A couple of more colloquial phrases are "to milk something for all it is worth" or "to suck the marrow out of something." The last one has a specific positive turn to it, as the marrow is considered to be the delicious part of the bone and is considered a delicacy; it evokes the image of someone literally sucking marrow out of a bone. To say you have sucked the marrow out of life means that you have enjoyed your life to the fullest extent possible. I hope that helps!
