Memory is broken down into three parts: your sensory memory, short term (working) memory, and long term memory. When we first experience a stimulus, we process it briefly in our sensory memory. If we pay attention to this stimulus, it will enter our short-term memory. By rehearsing the information in our short-term memory, we can store it in our long-term memory. Once in long-term memory, memories are subject to displacement or decay, which is why there are things we cannot remember.
