First, you'd want to distribute the (-6) to each term in the parentheses. That would give you:
(-6)xm + (-6)x2=m-2
Now that we have distributed the -6 to each term, let's simplify:
-6m - 12 = m-2
Then, we want to move all the unknowns (=m) to one side, and all the other values (=numbers) to the other side. Remember that in order to do so, the sign (+ or -) of each term changes as they pass the equal sign in order to go to the other side.
That would give us:
-12 +2 = m+6m
That is:
-10 = 7m
then, we divide both sides by m's coefficient to solve for m.
That would give us:
(-10/7) = m ⇒ m ≈ -1.4286
