Glad to hear in non-speaking form?

I'm from Russia and I've got a problem with writing a letter. Can I use the phrase "glad to hear such news" if I'm not speaking with a person? Isn't it better and more correct to use "glad to know"?

Yes, it is perfectly fine to say that you are glad to hear news or hear from someone even if you are referring to something you have read in a letter or message.
