Why is the pronoun "I" written with an uppercase letter, even when it's not at the beginning of a sentence?
In the following sentence, the pronoun _I_ is written capitalized, even if it is not at the beginning of a sentence. Why?

In English the only pronoun that we capitalize is "I." It is not for reasons of grammar. Those who have studied the matter believe that it has to do with the history of the printed word.
