It is no different without "过"in this case.
我最近没打过羽毛球 "I haven't played badminton recently" - is the 过 necessary in this sentence?
Just wondering if the 过 in this sentence can be omitted? Or does the sentence have a slightly different meaning if I remove it? Thanks in advance.

Hi you are right! You don't need 过 in this sentence. 过 means something you did in the past, which can be replaced by 最近 + 没 (you didn't do it recently). There are no slightly different meaning between these two sentence. Good questions!
